Fact # 1

After the elderly become infected with the novel coronavirus

The risk of severe illness and death is higher

Due to older age, weakened immune system and weak body resistance, the elderly may even have one or several underlying diseases or chronic diseases. Once infected with the virus, the risk of severe illness and death may be greatly increased.

Fact 2

The elderly are infected with COVID-19

The consequences are more serious

The facts of the epidemic in countries around the world, as well as in Hong Kong and Shanghai, tell us that the proportion of people over 60 years old who are infected with the novel coronavirus after hospitalization is higher, the proportion in need of rescue is higher, and the duration of hospitalization is longer, and the risk of death increases with age.

According to the latest death toll analysis released by the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Hong Kong Department of Health, more than 10,000 people have died in the fifth wave of COVID-19 in Hong Kong, more than 95% of whom are over 60 years old, with a median age of 86.

Fact 3

After an unvaccinated person becomes infected with the novel coronavirus

The fatality rate was 9.54 times that of those who received three doses of the vaccine

The fifth wave surveillance data (31 December 2021 to 9 November 2022) from the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) of the Hong Kong Department of Health showed that the risk of death was significantly reduced in the elderly population, especially in the older age group, after any three doses of COVID-19 vaccine were administered.

① The elderly aged 80 and above

The case fatality rate of those who received three doses of the vaccine (Sinovac or Fampicide) was 1.55%, while that of those who did not receive the vaccine was 14.78%, 9.54 times higher than that of those who received three doses. The risk of death was also significantly reduced after the first dose of the vaccine, with the fatality rate for those aged 80 and above contracting COVID-19 after one dose being 7.15%, half the risk of those who did not receive the vaccine, and falling to 3.75% for those who received two doses.

② 70-79 years old, 60-69 years old

The case fatality rates were 4.61% and 1.75% for those who did not receive the vaccine, 0.61% and 0.16% for those who received one dose, 0.16% and 0.06% for those who received two doses, and 0.19% and 0.05% for those who received three doses.

From the above data, it can be seen that there is a significant difference between the risk of death of the elderly at any age, especially those over 80 years old, who have been vaccinated against COVID-19 and those who have not been vaccinated against COVID-19, showing the protective trend of vaccination against severe illness and death in the elderly.

Fact 4

Chronic diseases are not COVID-19 vaccines for the elderly

Absolute contraindications to vaccination

Even elderly people with chronic diseases such as cancer, hypertension, diabetes and COPD can be vaccinated against the novel coronavirus as long as their health condition is stable, medications are well controlled and doctors have assessed them.

Fact 5

Vaccination against the novel coronavirus

There is no upper age limit

There is no upper age limit for COVID-19 vaccination.

The system shows that many centenarians have been vaccinated against COVID-19.
